This novel reflects history very well. This book very well seems like historical fiction. There are quite a few MAJOR events that happened in history that were included in this book.
First of all it was written during and about the dust bowl in the thirties! This had a major impact on America; it took down crops and severely weekend agriculture for quite some time. There was so much dust that it reached over the tops of houses and barns. It was a horrible thing that happened.
Also, the Great Depression was taking place. That obviously had made a big impact on everything in America. People were out of jobs, since those people were out of jobs they couldn't afford other things to buy for other people's jobs and it was just a huge mess. There were so many homeless people and it was truly a horrible time for the people living in those conditions. I am so glad that I didn't have to go through that, I am hope me and no one else will.
Obviously John Steinbeck was influenced by these events! Everyone was! Not just people in the United States, though. Since our country was messing up with financial issues, it wasn't helping anyone else out. I mean I doubt Steinbeck was thinking about writing a story about ponies puking rainbows. The only reason someone would write a story about that in those times would be to maybe try and not think about things like that and forget about it for a bit. These events from history were one of the most life changing and unbelievable things to happen. It was a smart thing to write a book on. I imagine it would have been hard to make money off of that book though at a time like that. I mean authors are usually really poor anyway. Maybe he had another job, though, I haven't read up on any of the author's history or anything like that.
